Shinnecock & Peconic Fishing Report 5-5-24

More action has been reported in both Shinnecock and Peconic bays over the past week. Shinnecock has seen a good amount of striped bass make their way to the Ponquogue bridge and other western bay spots. The bluefish are beginning to make their presence known as well.  Local areas including Heddy creek, Quogue canal and Shinnecock canal have seen both blues and striped bass. The opening of both porgy and fluke season saw action on both species. The Peconic bay out near Jessups Neck saw a good amount of big porgies make it to the cooler. While a few fluke were seen and caught too, the porgies were the main target. Generally the best location to target early season fluke in Shinnecock bay is just south of the canal. Shinnecock canal has had reports of fluke, bluefish, striped bass and even a couple of blowfish.

That’s a solid fishing report! I’ve been itching to get out to Shinnecock for the fluke season, but my schedule has been a nightmare lately. Between my job and these intense university courses, I’ve barely had time to check my gear. I was so stressed last week that I actually looked into whether I could pay someone to do my online exam just so I could spend the weekend on the water instead of stuck behind a screen. Seeing these photos of the catch really makes me want to wrap up my finals quickly so I can finally get out there and enjoy the spring run!
