EEBT Report 8-2-20

Shinnecock Bay/Inlet/Ocean

The fluke bite continues to be best in the bay. No real hot spot to target just have to move around depending on tide and wind direction. Squid, spearing and gulp baits all working well. The best bet for fluke in the ocean is on and around the reef. Great time to catch a few snappers and use them to target a doormat fluke. The sea bass action is good on the reef with a lot of short fish to cull through to get a keeper. Mixed in with the sea bass are plenty of porgies. Triggerfish are in our area, just have to find them. The striped bass are in good numbers around the Ponquogue Bridge but mostly schoolies with a few fish up to 31". Best time to target them is from dusk to dawn, once that sun is up it becomes more of a challenge. Live baits drifted as well as plugs, rubber baits and tins all working. Bluefish are still around the bay chasing bait but in the ocean under the bunker schools the bigger fish are lurking. The snappers should be showing more with each passing day.

Peconic

The summer time bite has settled in with mostly porgies and some weakfish to target. The porgies are throughout the bay but best near Robins Island and up around Jessups neck. The weakfish are in the deeper holes in the cooler water. Porgies are taking clams and weaks are taking squid. If you're looking for fluke best to get out around Shelter Island. We should begin to see snappers any day in most of the inlets and creeks.

Shorebound

The Shinnecock canal bite has slowed considerably but we should begin to see the snappers any day. For now it's mostly blowfish, porgies and a few small fluke. The Ponquogue bridge is seeing fluke, porgies and some schoolie striped bass on the night tides. Over at the Shinnecock inlet anglers have had triggerfish, fluke and porgies. Our local ocean beaches both east and west of the inlet are holding schoolies bass with an occasional keeper and a few fluke.
