It's Starting

April 27, 2017

Things are starting off well with a lot of buzz and traffic in the shop. We are fully stocked with all your baits and back to our seven day schedule.

Peconics

The Peconics are where it usually starts each season. The first weakfish have been caught up near the Peconic River as well as in the small inlets further east. The first keeper bass also came from up near the Peconic river too. Massive amounts of large adult bunker are moving in the Peconic river as well. The snag and drop bunker method should find a keeper if they are there.

Shinnecock Canal

The Shinnecock canal locks are finally back to normal with the work being done now complete and the barge removed. Our lock schedule is again accurate. Lots of bunker moving around in there along with some keeper sized fluke (can't keep them yet).

Shinnecock Bay

In the Shinnecock area the best bet is to head up to the Quogue canal. Out going water is key as the water is much warmer after a day of sun. A few other areas on the outer edges of Shinnecock Bay may deserve a try too. Where ever the warmer shallower water can be should not be overlooked. The Quogue Canal has produced a few more flounder than 2016 this spring and some schoolie bass too. The flounder require lots of chum.

This Weeks Tackle Tip

My advice would be to get out and target those weakfish because the bluefish are coming down the south shore and will be hear shortly to chase them out to there deep hiding spots. Best spring baits are soft plastics on a bucktail or lead head in 3/8oz to 1/2oz or a small paddle tail like the shakers. If you want to encounter those bluefish when they show just a tin and wire leader are all you need.

This years fluke regs will be:

3 fish bag limit (3 fish per person per day) at 19 inches

May 17 to Sept. 21
